I'm not a great expert in Japanese culture, but it is unusual for a chef to possess a katana.

Basically, they were weapons of war, only Samurai Lords, their Retainers (roughly equivalent to an understudy) or soldiers carried them.

If you had one, it was like the proverbial "kick me sign", that you were indicating you were ready and able to fight.

If you weren't a warrior, you just had a regular knife, for basic tasks.

I'm guessing though, it's done just for laughs.

I've certainly never heard of a chef using a katana to prepare meals, it would be dishonorable to use a weapon in such a manner.Buckmana 08:45, November 24, 2011 (UTC)
