Jennifer Ann Masterson, simply known as "Jen", (known as Julie Maréchal in the French dub) is a fictional character in the animated Canadian sitcom 6teen. She is voiced by Megan Fahlenbock.

Jen's everyday apparel consists of an azure hoodie and a white skirt with an indigo stripe running down the side. She wears dark blue socks and white sneakers with indigo soles.

Overview[]

Jen is introduced in the pilot episode as the most responsible of the main six and the only one that had a job at the time. Her introduction has her remark on her plans to work at the Penalty Box, where she reveals that she took a job at the Big Squeeze both to get the experience necessary to be hired and to pay off the debt she incurred from an automobile accident she caused. She also shows that she plans ahead quite a lot, as she is ready for her interview and encourages her friends to prepare for theirs.

She ends up hiring Caitlin Cooke to run the lemonade stand after rejecting all the other applicants (mainly on appearance), and spends her time training Caitlin to work hard. She and Caitlin originally clashed quite a bit during training, as the latter didn't meet Jen's standards. Jen's work ethic is one of her defining characteristics, as in the episode "The Big Sickie", the others of the main six try to get Jen to take a day off work to go to the mall carnival, and one of the frequent issues in Jen's relationship with her boss is that she feels she is underappreciated at work despite her setting and breaking sales records.

Despite her hard work, Jen tends to goof off. In the episode "Career Day", Jen's aptitude test reveals that she should be a snowboarder or run a snowboard company, to which she starts slacking off at work thinking she'll be a successful businesswoman and likes the results. Additionally, she leaves her job without permission.

She is also short-sighted, as in the episode "The Five Finger Discount", Jen was not proud of the things her friends stole from their workplaces. She quickly reverses her comments when she sees a girl walking with a new jacket that the Penalty Box had ordered and steals one for herself to impress a. Although Jen didn't get terminated from her job, she and the rest of the main six had to spend time in the penalty box for unlawful entry and attempted theft.

Jen is very goal-oriented and considers herself a leader. However, as a consequence of this, she is often pushy and bossy, which was something her friends complained about in the episode "One Quiet Day". She also has a tendency to take charge, as was observed by Briana in "Spring Fling," and as she noted in "Sweet 6teen," she's always been involved in planning stages of every event she goes to. Jen is also very scheduled, as she keeps a "life schedule" (as seen in "The Journal"), a cop shows schedule (as seen in "Bye Bye Nikki? Part 1"), knows to the day how long her friends have worked in the mall (as seen in "Going Underground") and how long until they'll be applying to colleges (as seen in "J is For Genius"), and is so agenda-focused that she'll even plan a night at the Amusement Park in "Silent Butt Deadly." Despite this being sometimes a drawback, her focus on strict responsibility has helped at times, such as when she assigned everyone jobs to make sure her mother's delivery went off as smoothly as possible in "Labour Day - Part 1." Her sister even points out that Jen was always the responsible one of the family in "It's Always Courtney, Courtney, Courtney!" and Jonesy and Courtney both acknowledge that Jen is far more responsible than both of them put together in "Labour Day - Part 2."

Jen sometimes suffers from jealousy. A majority of the plot for the episode "It's Always Courtney, Courtney, Courtney!" focuses on how Jen feels like she's always in her sister's shadow, as Courtney wins over Jen's friends with her charm. In the episode "2-4-1," Jen spends a majority of the episode complaining about Caitlin's ability to attract guys while she can't attract a single one. In the episode "Bring It On," she becomes annoyed when Jonesy appears to be a better salesperson than her. At the end of the episode "The Fake Date", she wonders what Charlie Dobbs' girlfriend has that she doesn't.

Jen's goals in life are to either be an Olympic snowboarder or start her own snowboarding gear company (preferably both). She is apparently an accomplished skier and snowboarder, and is on her school's snowboarding team (as was mentioned in "Welcome to the Darth Side"). She also plays basketball, as Courtney mentioned in "It's Always Courtney, Courtney, Courtney!" Her interest in sports and desire to start her own snowboarding gear company are what led her to get a job at the Penalty Box.

Despite frequently complaining about being dateless, Jen dated twelve boys over the course of the series, except for Jude Lizowski, who pretended to be her date. Despite this, only two of these relationships lasted any length of time; Jen dated Charlie Dobbs in two (nonconsecutive) episodes, and dated Travis Gibson from "Blast From The Past" until "Great Expectations." However, when compared with her two closest female friends, Jen has neither had a high quantity of relationships, like Caitlin, nor a long-lasting relationship like Nikki Wong.

Family[]

Relationships[]

  • Nikki Wong - Jen's longest female friend. Nikki seems to be the one she can be the most personal with. When Jen's half-sister Emma Jr is born, Nikki is the first person she contacts to help her out and she acts as a loving and affectionate aunt-like figure to baby Emma.
  • Jonesy Garcia - Jen used to have a crush on Jonesy but that appears to have long gone, They have stayed really close since. With them being step-siblings, their relationship is a mixture of sibling comraderie and close friendship.
  • Jude Lizowski - While Jude and Jen were never romantically involved with one another, they have done several things that couples usually do like take Jen out on a date when the Penalty Box has a fancy party or when they take their picture at the mall's new "baby picture making" booth. They have been extremely close since they were little and are very sweet, loyal, helpful, and kind to one another, and they're both athletic and sporty.
  • Wyatt Williams - They two are extremely close and have been insightful and supportive of each other ever since they were in Kindergarten.
  • Caitlin Cooke - Jen started off irritated by Caitlin's lack of work experience but the two become close friends by the end of the first episode. She also seems to be the one Jen can share her more girly girl sides with.

Trivia[]

  • According to the second episode, Jen has been friends with Nikki and the boys since Kindergarten.
  • The members of the main six (from tallest to shortest) are: Jonesy, Wyatt, Jude, Jen, Caitlin and Nikki.
  • Jen is the only member of the group who has been employed at the same place since the first episode and has never changed jobs (at least not since gaining employment at the Penalty Box).
  • Jen is a fan of the popular boy band DawgToy and her favorite member is Jason, who she claims "even feels cute".
  • Jen is highly allergic to mushrooms; eating them results in her becoming violently gassy and suffering from diarrhea. However, in the episode "Deadbeat Poets Society", she ate Starr's Fun with Fungi dish (a food item that included mushrooms) without incident. It's possible that Jen's only allergic to a specific type (or types) of mushrooms, and can eat other mushrooms.
  • Jen, as a child, liked to run around naked in her backyard (which is why Courtney nicknamed her "Flash").
  • Jen has unintentionally flashed her breasts in front of her entire group of friends ("It's Always Courtney, Courtney, Courtney!") and has been seen mostly or completely naked on two other occasions by Jonesy ("The Wedding Destroyers" and "Over Exposed").
  • Jen has the highest sales rate of all of the Penalty Box employees.
  • Jen's family moved into Jonesy's house after Jonesy's dad and Jen's mom got married.
  • Jen's ethnicity is Irish Canadian.
  • Jen's voice actress also voices Gwen, a character from the Total Drama franchise. Her voice is basically a much more laid-back version of Gwen.
  • Jen was taught yoga by Starr as shown in the episode "In a Retail Wonderland...".
  • In "The Journal," Jen loses her journal and is made deeply unhappy when the whole mall finds out about her private thoughts. Ironically, she is always the first one to pry into others lives; for instance, in "One Quiet Day" she spends a lot of time trying to find out why Jude isn't stressing over finals, and in "Deadbeat Poets Society", she looks into why Wyatt has relaxed. In the latter case, she doesn't even ask what's going on with Wyatt, and doesn't respect his wishes that she'll leave him alone when she finds out.
  • Jen once harbored a crush on Jonesy Garcia when they were in middle school (presumably before her mom and his dad started dating), but it has stated that she's completely over it. This was proven in "The New Jonesy."
  • Although it has not been explained what happened to her biological father, in "The Wedding Destroyers," Jen specifically says he's not around. While she does not say why he's gone, the subtext heavily suggests her father is deceased, but during the episode "Deck the Mall," Jude points out that its Jen's first Christmas since her parents got divorced. Also, in "It's Always Courtney, Courtney, Courtney!" Courtney mentions that her and Jen's parents want Courtney to be more mature and responsible like Jen is (indicating that their dad was still around). Assuming that Jen and Courtney's father is indeed deceased, he must've passed away not that long after he and Emma (Jen and Courtney's mom) got divorced.
  • Jen's name was mentioned on Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race by MacArthur, during which it's revealed that she used to babysit MacArthur.
    • However, it is revealed that Total Drama takes place in the same universe as 6teen, and MacArthur is older than Jen.
  • Jen is the only girl in the group who doesn't wear eye makeup, specifically eyeshadow; Caitlin wears blue eyeshadow that matches her skirt while Nikki wears purple eyeshadow that accentuates her hair.
  • Jen is the only one in the gang who is confirmed to have a middle name, which is "Ann".
  • It's been shown that Jen has known many guys during those sports camps she went to.
    • When she was at soccer camp, all the girls (including her), knew about Kyle Donaldson and he wasn't even allowed on the grounds.
    • When she was at tennis camp, she dated a guy named Jeremy there, and Courtney stole him from her because she had bigger breasts.
